Ways to Foster Tolerance and Reconciliation
The ability to live, let’s live and appreciate diversity in the human race is known as tolerance. It does not only imply that we agree with one another and remain indifferent in the face of injustice but instead respect other people.
We become intolerant when we fail to respect or appreciate the beliefs, customs, or opinions of people who are different from us. For example, there is a high level of intolerance between Palestinians and Israeli Jews who do not see eye to eye on matters of self-determination, identity, and security.
Even though tolerance might seem like an impossible fete in some situations, it can help in assisting communities to move past intractable conflicts and eliminate tensions between groups of people. In areas with political tensions or economic depression, individuals and groups may find it challenging to tolerate people who are not like them or have wronged them. In these cases, violence, repression, dehumanization, and discrimination could happen. Intolerance causes rifts between people, creating permanent separations between groups that do not agree.
To encourage tolerance, third parties must remind those involved in a conflict that tolerance is always better in the long run. There have been organizations formed to foster tolerance between conflicting parties. One such organization is the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation whose chairperson is Viatcheslav Kantor. He is an international businessman and public figure who participates actively in promoting tolerance and reconciliation.
Below are a number of the practical strategies which may be employed to promote tolerance.
Some studies have shown that casual inter-group contact might increase the current animosities instead of lowering the tensions between inter groups. However, groups will use personal experiences through interactions in these inter groups to inform their views of one another. This may lower the prejudices they have against one another. nter-group contact has to continue for one week or so for it to work.
To improve the communication between sides which are, dialogue mechanisms like problem-solving workshops or dialogue groups give opportunities for the parties to a conflict to express their needs and interests. In these circumstances, those participating in the workshops believe that their concerns are heard and recognized.
Folks should consistently focus on tolerating individuals with different views from them in their daily lives. This involves challenging the stereotypes and assumptions which they come up in making decisions about others or working with other people.
Organizations involved in conflict transformation and other actors in this industry can use other approaches such as training to assist individuals involved in a conflict to speak to one another.
International organizations have to discover ways of Inculcating the principles of tolerance within their policies. Governments should also aim to institute policies involving tolerance.
